2020 – 2022

During the pandemic lockdown, I saved seeds from the fruits I ate and leftover bones from my everyday meals.

To pass the time, I sprouted the seeds, mostly apples and some peaches, oranges, pears, and cherries. At first, they seemed to grow well, but soon, many started to wither away and die. So I decided to take a picture of them using a Polaroid camera before they perished.

Although I tried my best to clean, disinfect, and deodorize the leftover bones by boiling them and putting them in hydrogen peroxide, I could still detect the decaying odour, probably the phantom smell. I tried to hide this phantom smell by covering some bones with graphite powder.

At the exhibition, “Certain Things from Uncertain Moments,” at YYZ Artists’ Outlet in Toronto, I put fruit seeds, sprouting plants, alive plants, dying plants, and photos of dead plants alongside the bones.
